Linked by grade level to the left is an alignment between the Core Knowledge Sequence and the Colorado
Grade Level Expectations that has been completed by the National Core Knowledge
Coordinator of Colorado. They can be downloaded as one document (all grade levels
and subject areas together), by subject area (all grades together), by grade
level (all subject areas together), or by each grade level and subject area
separately. They can be downloaded as a PDF document or a Word document. If you
are planning to print the document only, use the PDF document, but if you plan
to adjust the document, use the Word document. This alignment will help teaches
better understand the relationship between Core Knowledge and the Colorado
Standards and the importance of using both together. It will also benefit the
Colorado schools by providing a solid example of how to align standards to the
Core Knowledge content. The hope is that teachers and schools will use this
alignment to guide instruction in individual classrooms and that the information
provided will serve as a useful starting point to ensure that both the Core
Knowledge content and the skills and standards required by the state are
addressed in a systematic and organized manner. These documents show that simply
teaching the Core Knowledge content covers many of the Grade Level Expectations,
but some Grade Level Expectations need to be taught in conjunction with the Core
Knowledge content. Teaching the Core Knowledge content does not, and should not,
mean it must be done separately from skills and standards; ideally it is taught
in combination with skills and standards. Teachers must be aware of how the Core
Knowledge content and the Colorado Grade Level Expectations work together in
order to adequately cover both.
